Morristown earned the title of “A Military Headquarters of the American Revolution” after serving as General Washington’s headquarters from 1777-1778 and is now the home of the country’s first National Historic Park. History abounds in the community where Benedict Arnold, the Marquis de Lafayette, Alexander Hamilton, Samuel Morse and Thomas Nast all played a part. Morristown was part of Morris Township until 1865 when Morristown was separated and incorporated.

 

Morris Township was formed in 1740 and completely encircles the town of Morristown. It was a 19^th century destination for the wealthy families of New York who built homes and estates to escape the heat and noise of the city, though taxes and the Depression took their toll in the 1930’s and most of those grand houses are gone. Some of the original residences now serve other purposes, such as the Willows (historical farm) and Delbarton (catholic high school). With access provided by I-287, Route 202, the Route 24 freeway and proximity to Morristown, the county seat, Morris Township is host to companies such as Colgate-Palmolive and Honeywell.

 

Now home to an ethnically and socially diverse population, Morristown and Morris Township combine to form a unique blend of urban and suburban culture and they continue to grow and change with the times.
