History of the Morris Community Chest

As stated in it's 1922 Certificate of Incorporation, the Morris Community Chest was formed under the provisions of an 1898 State of New Jersey Act of Legislation. The purpose of the organization was "to encourage, promote, conduct and engage in ... welfare work" in order to provide "charitable relief, social welfare and like activities of general concern in Morristown and Morris County". The Community Chest not only worked to raise money for the social agencies of Morris County, they also solicited funds for the Second World War effort. Original associated organizations and activities included: the Morristown Memorial Hospital, All Souls Hospital, Central Bureau of Social Service, the Visiting Nurse Association, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Cauldwell Memorial Play Ground, Morristown Chapter of the American Red Cross, Anti-Tuberculosis Association, the Old Ladies' Home (the Mt. Kemble Home), Boy Scouts, Neighborhood House, Women's Employment Society, Speedwell Auxiliary and the Morristown Library. Today the organization is known as the United Way of Morris County.
