Thomas Nast, the father of the American political cartoon, lived in Morristown, NJ, for 30 years. The world-renowned cartoonist made famous the Democratic donkey, the Republican elephant, and the Tammany Hall tiger. He became the most powerful political cartoonist of his time in America. Today, editorial cartoonists the world over can trace much of their artistic legacy to his single creative force.

The purpose of The Thomas Nast Society is to encourage research, exchange information and knowledge, preserve the original and published works of Nast, and to relate his contribution to his time and his legacy. The society provides a forum for the work of the numerous scholars and institutions which have been active in Nast research. It provides members with an update on current studies of this well known American artist.

The Thomas Nast Society, located in Morristown, New Jersey, publishes "The Journal of the Thomas Nast Society," an annual journal of articles, bibliographies, and other educational materials, and has held events, exhibits, receptions and lectures in Morristown to showcase the life and work of Nast.

Membership in the Nast Society includes the current issue of the Journal, and prepays your copy of the next volume.

Please Note:

The Thomas Nast Society suspended publication while the Morristown & Morris Township Library was under construction for a new addition.  We hope to resume publishing in 2008 or 2009.
