March is Women's History Month

Have you heard of these famous women?

Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Harriet Ross in 1820 and died in 1913. She was born into slavery, but escaped in 1849. Tubman rescued countless others from slavery by operationg the Underground Railroad, a secret passageway from the South into the North. She also helped the poor and elderly. Harriet Tubman said, "I freed thousands of slaves, and could have freed thousands more, if they had known they were slaves."

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in 1815 in New York and died in 1902. She was an important 19th century suffragette and civil rights activist. She helped organize the first ever women's rights convention in 1848. She is a big reason why the 19th Amendment evenually passed, giving all citizens the right to vote. Elizabeth Cady Stanton said, "I would have girls regard themselves not as adjectives, but as nouns."

Madam C.J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove in Louisiana in 1867. She was born to parents who had been slaves.She invented a line of African-American hair care products in 1905, worked hard and became the first self-made female millionaire in America. She shared her wealth with others and donated large amounts of money. Madam C.J. Walker said, "There is no royal flower-strewn path to succes...And if there is, I have not found it for if I have accomplished anything in life it is because I have been willing to work hard."

Think Green!
The Great Big Green by Peggy Elizabeth Gifford Both a riddle and an ode to the earth, this picture book is a great title for Earth Day. Readers will revisit the world after the riddle's reveal to find the many green things hidden in each piece of art.
The Frog in the Well by Alvin Tresselt Ceertain that the world is ending when the well he lives in runs dry, a frog hops out and discovers trees, flowers, and other creatures he never imagined.
