Barbershop Quartet

Four Old Parts Barbershop Quartet

Saturday May 5, 2012
10:30 AM
In celebration of the grand reopening of the library's historic Willis Wing please join us as we welcome the Four Old Parts Barbershop Quartet as they perform for us.

The Four Old Parts is a young-at-heart barbershop quartet whose venerable graybeards (only one of them actually sports a beard) have over 170 years of barbershopping experience among them.

The quartet, formed in 2006, offers classic barbershop sound, liberally sprinkled with laughs. Their repertoire includes some of your old favorites, plus a song or two that may become your new favorites.

Lead Dave Mittelstadt sang in his first quartet when Harry S. Truman was president! He can sing any part to almost any song, and during the late 1960s and early 1970s directed his barbershop chorus to two international championships.

Bass Dick Floersheimer is the quartet’s elder statesman; he remembers the Dead Sea when it was just sick. But he still produces organ-like bass notes so deep that others would need a diving bell to reach them. He also arranges almost all of The Four Old Parts’ music.

Baritone Ken Hoffmann’s specialty is those notes that, like the extra pinch of spice in a great sauce, make barbershop chords ring with a unique richness. Baritones are a special breed, and Ken has been one since the first day he sang barbershop over three decades ago.

Tenor Terry Scullin is a young whippersnapper compared to the rest of the quartet, having discovered barbershopping only nine years ago. His true tenor falsetto allows him to reach notes where the air is thin, and his Irish gift of gab is evident in the Four Old Parts’ between-songs patter.

Because its members are all retirees, The Four Old Parts are able to rehearse and to perform during the daytime. They’re available for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, barn raisings, sheep shearings, revival meetings, tailgates, shivarees, flea markets, demolition derbies and bachelor-ette parties (Chippendales uniforms extra).
