Midnight Movies

Midnight Movies at 7: Eraserhead

Thursday January 23, 2014
7:00 PM
Is it a nightmare or the real view of a warped world? Are these hallucinations of the main character or the real thing?

If David Lynch didn’t confuse the viewer with Twin Peaks or Blue Velvet, he surely will with Eraserhead, his first film — and one that almost didn’t have enough funding to see the light of day.

The film centers around Henry Spencer and his life in an industrial town filled with giant machines, and in an apartment that has bowls of water sitting in his dresser and contains piles of dirt and vegetation. Henry soon learns that his girlfriend is pregnant and when she gives birth, the resulting creature looks mutant and snake-like and has developed health maladies.

Initially ignored by many viewers, Eraserhead slowly grew among midnight movie audiences and developed a following among critics. Described as both a “collapsing factory” and a “dying orgasm,” the film essentially set the stage for Lynch’s later work and some critics even consider it his finest film. Stanley Kubrick listed the movie as his personal favorite and he even made the cast and crew of his movie The Shining (1980) watch Eraserhead multiple times in order to get the proper mood Kubrick wanted for his film.

This film is part of an occasional series entitled “Midnight Moves at 7” (showing cult and B-movies traditionally shown at Midnight Movie houses).

Light refreshments will be served.

This program was made possible thanks to funding from the Friends of the Library.
