AARP Tax Aide Program

Tuesday February 6, 2018
7:00 PM
Back by popular demand, Tom Meek and Malcolm Cheung, volunteers with the Morris County AARP Foundation Tax Aide program, will speak about NJ and Federal income tax returns. This program is geared toward people who do their own taxes at home or those who use the AARP Tax Aide program. Some topics covered are: the paperwork needed to complete your tax returns properly, NJ Homestead Rebates and property tax rebate programs, general tax issues and those of interest to retired people.

Our Presenters:  Thomas Meek has been an Advanced Tax Counselor for 5 years. He is one of 50 Morris County volunteers who provide free Federal and NJ tax preparation through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).   VITA is supported by the AARP and IRS with annual training, testing, and certification for all volunteers. Malcolm Cheung is Coordinator for the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide site in the Morristown Administration Building and a volunteer tax counselor for the past 4 years.  He is an actuary by training, and enjoys assisting others with the many challenges presented by the complicated, and often bewildering, tax code.

History Center

An Introduction to Land and Property Research at the North Jersey History & Genealogy Center

Tuesday February 6, 2018
7:00 PM
PLEASE NOTE: This talk will be held at the MORRIS COUNTY LIBRARY.

Join James Lewis for a talk on researching land and property records using the resources found at the Morristown & Morris Township Library.

In this presentation he will share what you can discover about your ancestors from land records.

Land and property research can reveal so much about how and where our ancestors lived and worked. Other family information such as the name of a spouse, heirs, other relatives, or neighbors can be found in land records. You might learn a person’s occupation, their previous residences, military service, citizenship, and other clues.

Land records may contain information found nowhere else, such names of family members, birthdates, wills and marriage settlements. James’s presentation will introduce you to the main types of New Jersey land records - such as deeds, grants, maps and plans, what they mean and where to locate them.

James Lewis is the Department Head of the North Jersey History & Genealogy Center at the Morristown & Morris Township Library.
