Memories of a Woman Doctor

The Way it Was: Memories of a Woman Doctor

Thursday April 11, 2013
1:00 PM
Join New Jersey physician and author Margaret Brisco, as she discusses her book The Way It Was: Memories of a Woman Doctor and talks about practicing in Newark, the people she served and the turbulent unrest of the 1960s that changed the face of the city.

Dr. Brisco was one of the first women to serve as an intern and resident at Newark’s Martland Medical Center and she eloquently captures the challenges of female doctors in the 1950s and 1960s and how she sought equality within the medical profession and overcame prejudice. The program is sponsored by the National Society of Arts and Letters and the general public is welcome.

Founded in 1944, The National Society of Arts and Letters is a non-profit organization that assists promising young artists through arts competitions, scholarships and other career opportunities. Stars such as Shirley MacLaine and Jessye Norman have been past NSAL award winners.

Bio

Margaret Brisco was born in Trieste, Italy and practiced obstetrics and gynecology in New Jersey for more than 35 years. She was a pioneer at a time when few women were physicians and even fewer women undertook specialties involving surgery. Since her retirement from medicine she has devoted herself to writing and published Childbirth: A Unique Experience, Women in Transition: I am a Wanderer and The Way It Was: Memories of a Woman Doctor.
