Michael Snyder

Rocks in the Garden: A Public History of Slavery in Morristown

Wednesday November 8, 2017
7:00 PM
In this presentation Michael will discuss the inspiration for his work and how he got started on this road of discovery. He will look at the various available sources and how he melded them into two cohesive studies. This talk centers on Morristown, but ventures out into the surrounding area to New Vernon, Madison, Chatham, and Hanover while exploring the interconnectivity of Morris County as a whole.

We will look at the slave owners and the enslaved, who they were, how they lived, how they were treated, the rifts slavery caused in the community, and the debate about slavery within the press of Morristown. We will also talk about how history is told, the marginalization of the enslaved, and the commemoration of slavery in the area.

This program is supported by the Friends of the Library.
