Apothecary Cocktails

Hangover Cures, Hot Weather Refreshers and Other Apothecary Cocktails

Thursday June 19, 2014
7:00 PM
‘Apothecary Cocktails’ in its name alone conjurors up an era of patent medicine, purported quick-healing remedies and restorative beverages of the nineteenth century and earlier. Author and ‘cocktail whisperer’ Warren Bobrow will talk about some of these restoratives and digestives, discuss the recipes in his book Apothecary Cocktails and will also mix up something for the evening’s attendees!

Before various breakthroughs in modern medicine and even the ready availability of a doctor in portions of the country, many people turned to home remedies for colds or even traveling apothecary salesmen who advertised tonics and bitters that would cure common colds or restore a ‘zest for life.’ Warren Bobrow was exposed to the patent pharmaceutical business through his grandfather and the interest never left! Warren wrote Apothecary Cocktails, Restoratives from Yesterday and Today (Fair Winds Press, 2013) that outlines recipes for many beverages from the “Habsburg Stomach Healer,” and the “Corpse Reviver,” to “Coconut Cooler” (just in time for summer!) and the “Roast Beet Borscht with Sour Cream Vodka” (yes, you read that correctly).
