Sixth Annual Book Arts Series: Lecture

Please join us for the first of three programs in The Sixth Annual Book Arts Series. The first program is a lecture entitled The Altered Book and features New Jersey book artist and educator Ellie Brown.

Artists long have altered books — whether cutting out portions of an existing book or pasting in new elements –– in order to manipulate the original text and images to make a strong point, raise an issue’s awareness, or for other reasons. In this talk, one artist will discuss the development of her altered books that are an homage to her past relationships and how those relationships shaped who she is as an adult. As a whole, her books, which make up a series entitled A Chronicle of Lovers, represent an important part of her autobiography and a larger social inquiry into what separates love, sex and romance for a contemporary woman.

The Book Arts Series has grown to become a wonderful, annual event here in Morristown. There is a reasonable fee for the workshops thanks to generous, private support, but seating is limited so please register early to secure a seat. Refreshments will be provided for each session beginning 30 minutes prior to the start time listed above (please note the lecture this year is on a Thursday evening). Bio

Ellie Brown is a native of Boston, Mass. where she attended Massachusetts College of Art. She received her B.F.A. in Media Arts in 1997 and her M.F.A. in Pictorial Arts from San Jose State University in 2002. Ellie has received numerous awards including: a 2008 Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, a Leeway Foundation grant, first prize from the Fraser Gallery's International photo competition, a featured artist from women in photography international, the Calumet Award from the Print Center’s 2006 and 2008 International Photography Competition. Both her bookwork and photographs have been exhibited extensively nationally and internationally including a solo exhibition at the Galeria Nacional in Costa Rica and a solo show entitled A Chronicle of Lovers at The Center for the Book Arts in 2009. Presently, Ellie has taught as a part-time and full-time lecturer in photography, digital media and 2D at many Colleges and Universities.
