The library opened at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 6. After a parade of book carts across South Street brought books back to the library building, Maria Norton, the new Library Director, opened the doors and welcomed back patrons. It was a happy reunion for staff and patrons who had been eagerly awaiting the opening of the building. Amid a flurry of press activity patrons flocked to the building to check out books, use computers, read newspapers and just to have a look around.
Although only one third of the building is now open, it was a great relief for both staff and patrons to be back in the building. Many said it was like coming home and expressed deep gratitude and pleasure at being back. We too, are happy to welcome back our devoted patrons. We thank everyone for their patience, support and good wishes.
As work continues in many parts of the building we have had to make some changes and adjustments. We hope you will find the following information helpful.
Book collections: Our Fiction, Non-Fiction, Children's and YA Collections will be accessible. New fiction and Large Print titles are on the second floor and new Non-fiction and Foreign Language titles are on the first floor.
Bookmobile: The Bookmobile has returned to its regular school schedule but we are pleased to announce a new public stop. In a joint venture with the Morris Township Fire Department we will offer a storytime for ages 3-5 at the Woodland Fire House on Monday mornings at 11:00 AM.
Book Sale Donations: Unfortunately, the library cannot accept used book donations at this time and there are no book sales planned at this time. We will let you know as soon as we can accept your gently used donations again, thank you for your patience.
Computers/Internet access: We will have a limited number of computers available for internet access. We will have WiFi available in the new wing of the library but seating will be limited until we are able to occupy more areas of the library building.
Entrances: You will be able to enter from both the back door ( by the courtyard ) and the new Media entrance closest to the Presbyterian Parish House parking lot. The South Street entrance will remain closed until further repairs are made.
North Jersey History & Genealogy Center: The collection is available except for our archives and art collection which have been moved off-site until all repairs to the library are complete.
Parking: The parking lot behind the library will be available but limited, since we need some spaces for various contractors working on the repairs. On the street metered parking is also available and don’t forget about the metered parking at the Vail Mansion, within easy walking distance to the library.
Reference Department: You will find this department in the new wing by the big staircase. The collection is not browsable but reference librarians can retrieve specific titles for you.
Seating: Unfortunately, we will have limited seating and not as many computers available for internet access until we complete repairs in the 1917 & 1933 Willis wings.
Study Rooms, Technical Training Lab and the Meeting Room: We have one small study room available for the public to use. It seats a maximum of four people. (The large study room which held a maximum of eight people will be used as a work space for book deliveries from other libraries. )
The Technical Training Lab has been re-purposed into storage and office space for the Reference Department. At this point in time it is uncertain when the meeting room will be available for use by community groups as we may need it for swing space for various collections as we make repairs.
Though the library staff has continued to work hard behind the scenes (see our full report for details), we are thrilled to be at our desks again helping our loyal patrons with all of their information needs.
We hope to see you soon.
