We have chosen some classic and contemporary poets. You should recognize some of your favorites by Robert Frost, Edna St. Vincent Millay, William Butler Yeats and of course, William Shakespeare. Contemporary poets are represented by Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Mary Oliver, Charles Simic and many more.
If you love poetry you can have a poem delivered daily to your email or through an App on your mobile device by signing up for Poem a Day from The Academy of American Poets website, POETS.org. You will never be without a poem again.
Our Teen librarian is also encouraging all aspiring young poets to enter their poems in a Teen Poetry Contest. From now until April 15th, Morristown and Morris Township residents in 6th - 8th grades are welcome to submit an original poem that is no longer than 300 words. Prizes will be awarded.
There are lots of great poetry places to know about, both real and virtual. Poets House is a library and cultural center that provides "a home for all who read or write poetry." Located in their beautiful new home in Battery Park City, the library looks out at the Hudson River and is a great place to read, think and dream poetry. They also have a full schedule of events for children and adults including readings and writing workshops.
The National Book Foundation has recently launched a Poetry Blog. The NBA Poetry Blog is a retrospective examining more than 60 years of National Book Award-winning poetry. The design features the covers of the award winners and you simply click on the book cover to be taken to the blog entry for that book. The blog provides an opportunity for a group of talented contemporary poets to comment on some of the greatest American poets and their books, with one original essay published each weekday into May, 2011.
We hope you will stop by the library to read the poems we've displayed and that you explore some of the websites listed here. And if you take a trip to Poets House you won't be disappointed. Enjoy.
