Sarah Dessen has a new book coming out this weeks. So in honor of that I decided to talk about one of my favorites by her, Just Listen. If you haven't read anything by Sarah Dessen you should probably give this one a try first.
After a falling out with her best friend Sophie just before the end of school, Annabel spent the summer pretty much alone and friendless, exiled from her group of friends. She decided to separate from them of her own accord, but when the book opens we don't know why.
But now Annabel has the navigate the new school year the same way she went through the summer. Except at school things are harder. When she meets Owen, a loner with a passion for music and telling the truth.
This could have been any other generic teen romance title, but the characters were realistic to me, particularly Owen. And reading about Annabel's functionally dysfunctional family might make you feel a little less alone in the world. The issues dealt with in this novel are serious and meant for a more mature audience. I would recommend this one to any in 9th grade and up.
