I don't normally review movies on this blog, but there aren't usually two BIG movies in the theaters at the same time from two of my all time favorite YA novels. So this is a special occasion for sure.
Over the holiday weekend I went to the movies to see both The Book Thief and Catching Fire. Both of these novels are easily on my top favorites books of all time list, so I was weary about their movie versions. It's terrible when the movie version of a book you love is super disappointing.
But! That was not the case with either of these films. The Book Thief was a great adaptation. I hadn't read the book in several years, so I didn't spend the whole time comparing the two, but the actors were all well chosen and it had a very warm feel for a movie about the Holocaust. I also think it's a movie from a book where you don't necessarily need to have read the book to fully grasp the story.
On the other hand, I was glad I was so familiar with Catching Fire before I saw the movie. I think I would have been a little lost without the book as my foundation for the story. But having said that, I thought it stuck really close to the plot line and was really enjoyable. It had me on the edge of my seat even though I knew what was coming.
I would highly recommend taking the time to see either of these movies!
