Ben does not want a
brother. Then Zan arrives and
he's a chimp-brother.
Okay, so not that might not be the best review haiku I’ve ever written. But it gets the point across. Ben is an average middle schooler when his parents decide to move from one end of Canada to the other so that Ben’s dad can do research on communicating with chimps. He's going to teach a chimp sign language.
Enter Zan, the new chimp in the family. Ben isn’t happy about the move or his father’s research at first. But as he slowly opens up to Zan he learns more about love and family than he ever could have imagined.
Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel was not a book I expected to like. But Ben is such a nice kid and it’s a nice change to read a teen book that involves such an animal lover. And quite frankly, Zan the chimp is one of the most interesting and funny characters in the book!
