Haiku Review:
Born with just one ear
(Emily disagrees) and
Stick feels like a freak.
Stick by Andrew Smith is hard book. It's rough, it's harsh. Stick and his brother Bosten lead difficult lives, with their angry parents. This is no lighthearted read.
But it has interesting characters and a plot that keeps moving. It has a happy ending, even if there are some dark times in between. There are some situations that might not be appropriate for middle school readers, but it's a great story, particularly for boys who don't mind a bit of emotion mixed with their story.
I spent most of the book wishing I could hug Stick. And Bosten. And Buck. This is definitely a good pick if you enjoy contemporary fiction.
