Review: Quarantine by Lex Thomas

I'm not going to lie. I have a *thing* for books where survivors all band together at central location. Books like Monument 14, Trapped, and The Enemy are some of my favorites of this variety. (The style is known as a "locked room story,") And Quarantine fits nicely into that list.

What David's most concerned about on the first day of school is having to see his ex-girlfriend. What he isn't prepared for is a major outbreak of a virus and his whole school having to go under quarantine. There's an explosion in one half of the school and David watches his English teacher die in front of him.

Fade to black.

When next we see David, it's a year later and the school has devolved chaos. There are no adults and everyone is in a clique. Almost everyone. But David has no clique. It's just him and his brother Will against all the other kids.

This is the first in a series called The Loners. I would recommend giving it a try if you enjoy books like Gone, The Enemy, and Divergent. It's not the best written book on earth, not going to win any awards, but it's an interesting and fast read, particularly if you enjoy other books of this genre.

(P.S. It is gory. No more gory than most zombie and/or dystopic novels, but the gore is there. And right from the beginning when the teacher dies. You'll know pretty quickly if it's a book for you.)
