Book Review: I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

Haiku Review:
I don't know what to
say about this book. But you
NEED TO READ IT NOW.

I'll Give You the Sun is a story told in alternating viewpoints at two different times. It's about a pair of fraternal twins. Jude tells the story from when the twins are 16 and Noah, her brother, tells the story from when they're 13 going on 14.

While from the outside it looks like a story about a family dealing with loss and sadness, this book has so many layers that I couldn't help but fall down the rabbit hole. I worried and wondered why their mom was acting so weird during the Noah viewpoints, and really felt for Jude during the later chapters when she couldn't figure out why all of her art projects kept getting destroyed.

As I'm trying to summarize this story, I'm struck once again by the sheer depth of the story, all of its twists and turns and revelations. I thought I had it all figured out, but even then there were so many surprises. The supporting characters are interesting and enigmatic, the twins' parents are flawed and realistic and frustrating.

I actually listened to this book on a long car trip I took recently and it really left its mark. I still can't stop thinking about it.

I would highly recommend it for anyone in high school who likes contemporary fiction with angst and still a little bit of whimsy thrown in for good measure.
