This week in high school book club we're reading If I Stay by Gayle Forman, so it seems to me that this might be a good time to highlight the companion to it Where She Went. Spoilers for If I Stay are all over the place here, so if you haven't read it BEWARE!
Where She Went is the companion novel and sequel to If I Stay. It doesn't pick up right where the first book left off, instead taking place three years later.
The mere fact that there's a sequel to If I Stay is probably in and off itself a spoiler, so if you haven't read the first one yet, I apologize for ruining the ending by stating outright that Mia survives the car crash that kills her parents and younger brother.
What I liked about Where She Went was that we got a different perspective on the same story, but also what happened after. This book is told from Mia's (ex) boyfriend Adam's point of view. I love hearing about things from him, and his sadness about Mia's family's death is palpable. I really felt for him.
If you liked If I Stay, definitely check out Where She Went. I know there's often criticism about Adam being whiny or unlikeable, but I do think he's allowed to be to a point. I don't think he allowed himself to grieve the way he should have. Because while he didn't lose his own parents, he lost a lot of important people and tried too hard to hold himself together while failing rather epically.
I could cry just thinking about him.
