If I had to choose a BBFF (Best Book Friend Forever) Vera Dietz would be up there on my list. She's independent, funny, intelligent and even though she has plenty of her own issues, I don't think our friendship would always be about her.
of Vera and Charlie, friends
for life or longer...
Vera Dietz has lived next door to Charlie for a long time and he's pretty much always been her only friend. When things between them start to take a turn towards romance, both put on the brakes for their own reasons. Through a series of tragic events, Charlie turns up dead and Vera just wants to get over it. She wants to move on on past Charlie because when he died, she's not sure if she loved him or hated him. Though she's pretty sure it was the latter. Either way, she still can't get him out of her head.
What I liked most about this book was the various points of view. One chapter would be from Vera's point of view, the next from Charlie (even though he's dead), the next from her dad and so on. It kept the book moving along.
How I would grade it:
General Awesomeness- 9
Also, the book was named a Printz Honor Book for 2011, one of the highest awards a Young Adult novel can garner!
