Review: The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen

Haiku Review!!

See Jessica run-
with only one leg? How will
this track star survive?

Jessica loves to run.  She could write an ode to her love for running.  Until one day when her track team is coming back from a meet and get into a bus accident.  One of her teammates is killed and Jessica loses one of her legs.  The Running Dream is the story of how Jessica comes to term with her new life as an amputee.  How does a person who LIVES to run, go on with life once it seems like running is out of the question?

What could have been an extremely depressing and melancholy book ends up having a little bit of everything in it.  It's tough and dark at times, but bitingly funny and optimistic at others. The author doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of Jessica's injury.  The reader is with Jessica on her darkest days after losing her leg.  But we also get to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

There's nothing easy about Jessica's life after the accident and this book will make you think about the things in your own life that you take for granted.
