The North Jersey History & Genealogy Center owns the papers, records and manuscript materials of individuals and organizations from the Northern New Jersey area.  Links to the finding aids for each individual collection are listed under the following subject headings.  A finding aid describes and lists the contents of a specific collection and is meant to be a guide for the researcher.  Researchers may access the contents of these collections in the North Jersey History & Genealogy Center Reading Room.


Church¸ School and Government Records

Abell, Frank D. Papers, 1901-1968
Morristown, New Jersey banker and politician; [Related collection, Jennie Dean Beaver, M.D., Papers, 1900-1967]

Chief George Nixon Collection, 1883-1998
This collection documents the career of a long-time Morristown firefighter and his rise through the ranks of the local fire department. The collection spans from 1883-1998 with the bulk of material dated 1960-1976. The documents, materials and artifacts found here (including fire ribbons and badges as well as a 19th century boarding house register book kept by his grandmother) were either created or collected by George Nixon.

Clyde Potts Papers, 1895-1959
This collection documents the personal, political and professional life of the former Mayor of Morristown, Clyde Potts. Types of material include printed material, letters, memoranda, speeches, reports and research that reflect his work both as Mayor and as a prominent Civil Engineer.

DeChiara Family Papers, 1905 – 2005.
Personal and business papers of the head of urban renewal responsible for planning Morristown’s Headquarters Plaza redevelopment project.

Friends of Steven B. Wiley Gubernatorial Campaign Scrapbooks, 1984-1985
Scrapbook containing photographs, news clippings, campaign flyers, and other ephemera from the Democratic Senator’s 1985 run for Governor.

Miscellaneous Manuscripts Index 1691-2011
Miscellaneous Manuscripts Collection contains smaller or single-item collections that are unrelated by provenance. The collection spans the years 1691 to 2011 and is arranged alphabetically. Content varies widely, but primarily centers around the Morris County vicinity and New Jersey.

Morris Academy Records, 1792-1914
Church¸ School and Government Records,Private school that provided a classical education for boys and girls. Many graduates attended Princeton or Yale Universities.

Morris County Civil War Certificates of Disability for Military Service, 1862
Certificates specifying physical or mental conditions that prevented Morristown residents from serving in the Civil War in 1862.

Morris County Militia Records, 1776; 1794-1812
The majority of the material in this collection includes lists of Morris County men drafted into the Militia between 1794 and 1812. Types of documents include paymaster receipts, muster roles, draft lists and fine lists, regimental orders, military court of appeals documents and a discharge paper.

Morris County Political Ephemera Collection, 1844 - 2018
Political campaign flyers, constituent communications, and political pins from Morristown, state, and national elections.

Morris County Sunday School Association Minutes, 1896-1930
Published minutes of the organization that supported the American Sunday School movement.

Morris Junior College Records, 1931-1970.
Mandate of the Emergency Relief Act; funded by Work Projects Administration; Morristown, New Jersey.

Morris School District Records, 1851-2009.
Collection of Morris School District historic documents, including information on the development of the school district and about the Boards of Education, Administration, schools, faculty, staff, sports and curriculum.

Morristown Charter Study Commission Records, 1969-1974.
The Charter Study Commission was an elected group of citizens who undertook a study of the town’s government and ultimately recommended, in 1972, that the towns governing structure be changed.

Paterson Project Collection, 1968-1978.
Fairleigh Dickinson University (Madison, New Jersey) transportation project.

Presbyterian Church in Morristown, ca.1791-1983
Documentation of the historic congregation, including the 1840 rift that led to the creation of the First Church and South Street Presbyterian Church, and its 1925 reunification.

Archdeacon of New York and rector of St. Michael’s Protestant Episcopal Church in New York; McClure Peters also founded the Sheltering Arms home for children.
