Peace Corps

Want to Make a Difference in this World? Come and Learn about the Peace Corps

Monday November 18, 2013
6:30 PM
Please join us for this Peace Corps information session and see how your skills can make a difference.

Peace Corps Volunteers are America’s best and most effective grassroots development workers, building relationships from the ground up as partners with communities across the globe. Volunteers spend 27 months living and working in areas that other programs are often unable to reach. During their service, Volunteers do not just work with the community; they become part of it. They eat the same food, live in the same kind of housing, speak the same language, and use the same transportation as other members of the community. By doing so, Volunteers build mutual trust and respect, and are able to advance the development needs of the host country – and promote a positive view of Americans – more effectively.

Volunteers serve only in those countries where the Peace Corps has been invited by the host government. Currently, more than 9,000 Peace Corps Volunteers serve in over 70 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Latin America, North Africa, Middle East, and the Pacific Islands. Around the world, Volunteers‘ projects fall into six sectors:

• Agriculture

• Business Development

• Education

• Environment

• Health and HIV/AIDS

• Youth Development

The skills that Volunteers acquire while serving abroad—whether fluency in a foreign language, complex problem-solving, or familiarity with a foreign culture—are invaluable to the United States, as is the commitment to public service that the Peace Corps instills. Ultimately, the investment that we make in our Volunteers is re-paid many times over, at home and abroad.
