Anniversary Program

Japanese Print Masterpieces from the Later 19th Century: 100 Years of Japanese Prints

Sunday November 6, 2016
2:00 PM
Presented by Tom Silver, this program will showcase wonderful print masterpieces primarily from Japan's Meiji Era, a revolutionary period which followed Commodore Matthew C. Perry's mission to Japan in 1853-4, and during which Japan transitioned from feudal state to modern Western-style world power.

In addition to the main topic the lecture will cover the print-making process as practiced in classical Japanese prints, and will offer practical suggestions for collecting this art. There will also be a discussion of relevant historical background.

Tom Silver is a former classical guitarist and recording artist who developed an interest in Japanese prints while searching for an unusual gift for his wife. That search sparked a love for this art which grew to encompass Japanese history and culture generally. Mr. Silver is a New Jersey native who was educated at Drew University and Rutgers University.

Has it really been 100 Years?

In 1916, the cornerstone of a new Library building was laid along Miller Road and South Street, overseen by local philanthropist Grinnell Willis after a disastrous fire that burned the Library & Lyceum just blocks away.  Thus, we are spending a year celebrating our building’s 100th anniversary!  Although library service in Morris Township and Morristown actually started right after the Revolutionary War (and continued with the Library and Lyceum throughout the 19th Century), our current “old wing” of the library dates to its grand opening in October of 1917.  Join us as we host a whole year of programs––sponsored generously by the Friends of the Library––that are tied into our anniversary and celebrate all sort of things that are 100 years old!
