Mid-Century Modernism and the Recent Past Debate

Thursday July 14, 2016
7:00 PM
Carol Barkin, local historian and preservationist, will discuss mid-century modernism in the context of its development from earlier New Jersey residential architecture.

Mid-century modernism is an architectural style that came into wide use after World War I. Like many radical departures from tradition, it was shocking at the time, and remains controversial.

Among other examples, Carol will present the case of Robert Morris Park in Morristown, a historic district for which she prepared a nomination to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.

Photo of Carol BarkinCarol Barkin, a local historian, is a member of the Morristown Historic Preservation Commission and chairs the Morris Township Historic Preservation Commission. She earned a certificate in historic preservation from the Drew University historic preservation program. Since 2005, she has been associated with the Morris County Tourism Bureau as the outreach manager and a docent for their annual walking tour series.  She was the author of the Robert Morris Park Historic District Register nomination.

This program is part of a series entitled, Protecting Natural and Historic Places, and is presented by the library and the Morris County Trust for Historic Preservation.

The natural and built environments together support each other, and every aspect of our lives.  That's why we preserve historic resources and protect natural spaces. This program series, running from April through October, features top-notch speakers in both fields, offering our community a new understanding of these local riches.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission and from the Friends of the Morristown & Morris Township Library.
