Foreign Cinema Series: A Bag of Marbles
A Bag of Marbles (France, 2018; NR)

The library is pleased to announce the fourth movie in our 3rd Annual “Foreign Cinema Series,” featuring eight entertaining and thought-provoking foreign films from Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Tonight's feature: A Bag of Marbles, a heartwarming 2018 adaptation of Holocaust survivor Joseph Joffo's memoir. The movie tells the story of the Nazi occupation of France through the eyes of two young Jewish boys, Joseph and Maurice. At 10 and 12, the boys have so little understanding of the persecution of Jews that Joseph thinks nothing of swapping his yellow star for a bag of marbles. Despite their naiveté, their father knows that the boys’ best chance to escape the Nazi roundup is to send them alone to Vichy France, where their older brothers have found safe haven.  Read more...
