Barry Thomson will give an illustrated presentation about the rich and varied equestrian heritage of the Somerset Hills and Morristown areas in the library's lower level meeting room at 2 p.m. Since the late 19th Century, when families of wealthy and socially prominent industrialists and financiers from New York and Newark first began to establish lavish country estates in the area, the history and culture of the region has been inextricably linked to various equestrian pursuits and international competitions under the auspices of the United States Equestrian Team.  Read more...

LIVING WITH PRIDE: Pride Month Film Series: A Fantastic Woman/Una Mujer Fantastica
The Library is pleased to announce our 2nd Annual “Pride Month Film Series” for 2018. Airing Thursday nights this June at 7pm, and centered on the theme “Living with PRIDE,” these four films from the U.S. and overseas celebrate the spectrum and diversity of the LGBTQ+ experience.

Our first movie, on Thursday, June 7, will be A Fantastic Woman (“Una Mujer Fantastica”) from Chile, which won this year’s Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Daniela Vega, who made history as the first openly transgender person to be a presenter at the Oscars, stars as Marina, a young transgender singer and waitress who must not only struggle with grief and loneliness when her lover dies, but must also fight for simple human respect and dignity. (Chile, 2017, 1:40, Rated R)

The library is pleased to announce the fourth movie in our 2nd Annual “Foreign Cinema Series,” featuring eight entertaining and thought-provoking foreign films from Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Tonight's feature: Ice Mother, a 2017 from the Czech Republic. After her husband's death, Hana lives on alone in the family villa. Her two sons visit her with their families, but these visits frequently end in quarrels. When Hana meets Brona, a hardy fellow, inured to winter swimming, a new world opens before her. Our movie on Thursday, June 14 will be Princess Cyd. Cited for “its clear tonality, lyrical storytelling, and graceful authenticity,” this coming-of-age story sees 16-year-old athlete Cyd visiting her novelist aunt in Chicago over the summer. “While there, she falls for a girl in the neighborhood, even as she and her aunt gently challenge each other in the realms of sex and spirit.” (USA, 2017, 1:36, Rated R)

Custom Mapping with Google My Maps
My Maps is a custom mapping tool which allows you to take the technology available in Google Maps, and personalize it for your own use. Through the use of Google Drive, we will cover such topics as creating a map, adding plot points, customizing information and features for added locations, creating directions and paths, accessing on smart devices and more. Google My Maps is a great way to create a customized visual tool to assist with business trips, family vacations, road trips, many other types of travel events!

Those registering for this class should have a significant comfort level with using a computer mouse, keyboard and the Internet. It is recommended that attendees have or create a Google account BEFORE the beginning of the class.

Morristown & Morris Twp. Library is starting a Chess Club in 2018! Join us for chess on the third Thursday of the month starting in January 2018 and running through June. The group will meet from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. upstairs in the F.M. Kirby Gallery. We will enjoy friendly, non-competitive, short games of chess between players of all skill levels. Improve your game, make new friends and enjoy playing chess! Players of all ages are welcome to play as long as they know the rules. Please bring your own chess board, pieces, and time clock. Games will be between 20-30 minutes as agreed upon between players.

The Friends of Foote's Pond Wood Gallery Exhibit is a joint effort of The Friends of Foote's Pond Wood and the North Jersey History and Genealogy Center of the Morristown & Morris Township Library. This show will cover the history, ecology, recreational activities and wildlife of Foote's Pond Wood, located in Morristown on James Street. There will be beautiful photographs, maps, artwork and more illustrating these topics as well as informative captions and articles. A reception for the event will be held on the evening of June 27 in the F.M. Kirby Gallery. We hope you can attend and meet the creative folks who put this exhibit together!

Our final movie in the series, on Thursday, June 28, will be BPM (Beats Per Minute), a “sprawling, thrilling, finally heart-bursting group portrait of Parisian AIDS activists in the early 1990s.” (Variety) Winner of 38 awards, including the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, this film has been described as a “film about love.
