Foreign Cinema Series: Le Havre (France, 2011; Not Rated)
The library is pleased to announce the fifth movie in our 2nd Annual “Foreign Cinema Series,” featuring eight entertaining and thought-provoking foreign films from Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Tonight's feature: Le Havre, a 2011 Cannes Film Festival winner film from France. In this warmhearted comic yarn from Aki Kaurismäki, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of Marcel, a kindly bohemian who shines shoes for a living in the French harbor city Le Havre. With inborn optimism and the support of most of his tight-knit community, Marcel stands up to the officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic French cinema of the past, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight and one of the Finnish director’s finest films.  Read more...

Pattern Books: Printed Precedents in American Architecture
7:00 PM
Pattern Books: Printed Precedents in American Architecture
Books, serial publications, and advertisements play an outsize role in the transmission of architectural ideas and innovations in America. Since the first Georgian-inspired houses of the 18th century appeared in colonial settlements, Americans have been using printed sources. Often grafted onto deeper traditional building practice and locally available materials, the result is a creative and distinct architecture that influenced housing, civic buildings, and religious buildings up to the Second World War. Join us as noted architectural historian and teacher Janet W. Foster explores the role of pattern books, particularly in New Jersey’s buildings.
