Susan Gulick, In Memoriam

Susan Gulick, In Memoriam
Susan H. Gulick, who worked at the Morristown & Morris Township Library from 1985 through 2010, passed away in the early morning of February 26, 2016. She worked in several areas of the library, including as the Archivist in the North Jersey History & Genealogy Center and then as Head of the Circulation Department, but she was best known as the library’s Director, a post in which she served from 1994-2010.

In fact, many of the current staff members she hired herself over her long tenure. She loved the library and was a visionary in its programming and in its promotion to residents.

She launched a Book Arts program, the popular Fly Fishing Dinners and even began the Director’s Book Club (now the Morning Book Club), which still meets once a month here at the library.  However, the part of the library that most exemplifies her hard work, is the new addition, completed in 2006.

Through the help of the Library Foundation, Friends of the Library, the Library Trustees and many countless donors, she helped to bring the vision of a much-needed library expansion for our patrons.  The new addition provided private study rooms, increased seating area, created a new Children’s Room, a dedicated Media Center, a computer training lab, and a new space for the library’s History Center, for which she always had special ties.

It is of special note that she was the recipient of the first scholarship from the Friends of the Library, which was awarded to library staff interested in pursuing a degree in Library Science, especially since she was always a great mentor to those young persons interested in becoming librarians themselves.  She was also a recipient of other awards, including the Susan Swartzburg Award, which is awarded by the History and Preservation Section of NJLA to honor those librarians who have made significant contributions to the field in collections preservation, archives and the book arts.

She will be missed by patrons and friends alike, but her lasting impact can be seen in the current library programming, the staff and the building itself, which showcases her deep love for an important institution.
